Guide
Is WhatsApp AI safe? Your privacy, explained.
AI is now part of WhatsApp, and many people are asking what it can read. Here are clear answers, from WhatsApp's own pages, plus how Cyrano handles your messages.
The short answer
Your personal WhatsApp chats stay end-to-end encrypted, and Meta AI only sees what you or others send to it. Since 16 December 2025 Meta has used conversations with its AI to personalise content and ads (excluding sensitive topics such as health or religion), and this has been reported as not applying in the EU, UK and South Korea. You can keep Meta AI out of a particular chat with Advanced Chat Privacy.
What Meta AI can see
- Your normal chats stay private. WhatsApp says personal messages remain end-to-end encrypted and Meta AI doesn't read them.
- It sees what is sent to it. That means your messages to Meta AI, or messages someone in a group sends to it.
- It only acts when asked. WhatsApp says Meta AI is only on when you choose to message it.
- Summaries use Private Processing. For features that look at your messages, such as summaries of unread chats, Meta says it uses a system designed so that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read them. Independent experts note this is different from end-to-end encryption.
What Meta does with AI chats
Meta announced that from 16 December 2025 it would use people's interactions with its AI to personalise the content and ads they see, but not conversations about sensitive topics such as religion, health, politics or sexual orientation. Meta says WhatsApp AI chats are only used across its other apps if your WhatsApp account is added to Meta's Accounts Center. Press reports say this change doesn't apply in the EU, UK or South Korea.
How to keep Meta AI out of a chat
Turn on Advanced Chat Privacy for that chat (tap the chat's name, then Advanced chat privacy). WhatsApp says that while it's on, people in the chat can't use Meta AI there, and media isn't saved automatically. Anyone in the chat can switch it on.
And Cyrano?
Cyrano is a different kind of WhatsApp AI: it replies to your contacts for you, so it has to read the chats you switch on. Here's exactly how it treats them:
- It only covers the one-to-one chats you choose. Never groups, statuses or channels.
- Nobody on the Cyrano team reads your chats, and they're encrypted where they're stored.
- Replies are written by Anthropic's Claude under settings that don't allow training on your content. No ads, and your data is never sold.
- You can pause everything in one tap, and delete everything at any time.

Questions people ask
Can Meta AI read my WhatsApp chats?
WhatsApp says your personal chats stay end-to-end encrypted and Meta AI only sees what you or others send to it. Features such as summaries of unread messages use what Meta calls Private Processing.
Does Meta use my Meta AI chats for ads?
Meta said that from 16 December 2025 it uses interactions with its AI to personalise content and ads, excluding sensitive topics. Press reports say this doesn't apply in the EU, UK or South Korea.
How do I stop Meta AI being used in a chat?
Turn on Advanced Chat Privacy for that chat. While it's on, people in the chat can't use Meta AI there.
Does anyone at Cyrano read my chats?
Nobody on our team opens or reads your conversations. Chat content is encrypted where it's stored, and opening the app needs your password and a code from your authenticator app. Your chats are used for one thing: writing replies for you.
Are my chats used to train AI?
No. Replies are written by an AI model (Anthropic's Claude, reached through OpenRouter) using provider settings that don't allow training on your content. We don't sell your data and there are no ads.
